A Survey of Guangdong’s Information Industry and Prospects for Guangdong-Hongkong Cooperation

Abstract

According to incomplete statistics, today in Guongdong province, there are around 10,000 enterprises or institutions engaging in IT-related R&D, manufacturing and service. The ratio of various made-in-Guongdong electronic products to the gross production of China accountsfor 20% to 30%. The Guangdong post and telecommunication industris development of telephone, digitol and Intelligence networks has come up to international level. The main optic fiber lines have stretched over 8,000 kilometers. The telephone popularization rate in the Pearl River Delta has been well over 50%. From the 80s, Guangdong, starting with traditional industries, has put great efforts in spreading electronic information technology to all aspects of the manufacturing industries. Today four main information nets have been established in Guangdong, including GDSTinet, Cernet, Golden Bridge Net, and public Telecom Net. Inter-links and resources sharing among these nets have also been constructed. The Guangdong·s popularization of Information technology has a quite fine prospect. The electronic industry will become one of the key industries of Guangdong. By the year of 2000, the output value of Guangdong’s electronic Industry will reach 150 billion yuan. The further development of the electronic Information industry depends upon its structure adjustment. Information manufacturing and service centers and software industry bases will be planned and established in Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhal, and Huizhou in the Pearl River Delta area. The Guangdong government highly stresses on developing the information industry. The information industry and market as well as development opportunities in Guangdong are merging with the rest of the world and becoming an integral part of the international market. The cooperation between Guangdong and Hong kong has broad prospects for the promotion of bilateral Information technology.
