Abstract
One-hundred-thirty-seven cases of gluteal muscle contracture were found in 13630 children followed penicillin injections, aged 3-12 years, from Apr.1987 to Oct.1988.This survey showed that the gluteal muscle contracture was predominently an iatrogenic disease.Among 7942 children receiving injections of penicillin diluted with benzyl alcohol 135 cases were suffering from the gluteal muscle contracture, while among 5688 children receiving injections of penicillin diluted with distilled water, only 2 developed contracture.Benzyl alcohol was apparently the most significant etiological factor. The severity of the lesion and the symptoms was closely related to the concentration of the benzyl alcohol and the frequency of injections It is hopeful to reduce the morbidity of muscular contractures by giving-up the use of benzyl alcohol.
