Abstract

1. Survey studies were carried out to determine levels of endogenous DA and 5-HT in the gills, labial palps, pedal ganglia, cerebral ganglia, and visceral ganglia of 5 species of marine bivalves using HPLC coupled with ED. 2. All tissues studied contained assayable quantities of these two biogenic amines although the richest source of both DA and 5-HT was the labial palp. Palp tissue generally contained 4–12 × more DA than the gill tissue. 3. High affinity binding of ( 3H)APOM was demonstrated in both palp and gill tissue of the sea mussel, Mytilus californianus. Competition experiments using d- and l-butaclamol, APOM and dopamine suggest the presence of specific dopamine-receptors in these ciliated tissues.
