Abstract The anomalous negative-velocity H I over the first and second quadrants of the Galactic longitude, especially in the Northern Hemisphere, has yet to be addressed by a model that successfully explains the properties of high-velocity clouds (HVCs) and intermediate-velocity cloud. Taking into account the influence of the radio continuum spur known as Loop III, parameters describing the supershell are derived through comparisons of model predictions with the latitude-velocity distributions of the HVCs in 5-deg longitude intervals. The agreement obtained between model results and Northern Hemisphere data indicates that the brightest HVCs result from column-density enhancements over a large depth in space.
