Abstract

WOULD you like to spend three weeks in a small Italian town? Would you like to be the only American in a provincial village? Would you be willing to meet its communist mayor and live with a strange family? Then come back a few months with me and cross the Atlantic Ocean and the Emilian Plains, and rest in the quiet beauty of Correggio. About two years ago my of Westbury, New York, adopted the village of Correggio. Since then residents of Westbury have sent packages to the needy families in Correggio. In an effort to promote a cultural exchange between the two communities, our Operation Democracy group decided to sponsor a community ambassador program. A young adult would be selected to go abroad to live with our adopted villagers, and upon his or her return to the United States, talk about his experiences to home groups. Applicants were asked to list their educational background, state the extent of their ability to speak Italian, why they wished to go to Correggio, and why they felt qualified to represent the American way of life. This is how I stated my qualifications in my letter of application:
