Abstract

During the Spring of 1945 the shortage of teachers for elementary schools in the Los Angeles City School District became so acute that the possibility of selecting teachers at the end of the second year of college was considered. Since such prospective teachers would have completed neither the requirements for a major field nor the requisite courses in elementary education for a California State credential, the development of a new selection procedure was necessary. Efforts were directed toward the planning of a selection procedure based upon pertinent information and objective measures which would help to insure success both in teaching and in grad uating from college at some later date to qualify for a regular credential. A review of the literature in education revealed that various factors, some measurable, some not, had been found to be important in the selection of students who would be successful in graduating from college and in teaching.
