Abstract

A sufficient condition for the stability of an axisymmetric mirror machine is obtained using the guiding center plasma model. The criterion is particularly suited to configurations with comparable transverse and longitudinal length scales, so‐called short, fat equilibria. Under this ordering, the stabilizing effects of plasma compression is significant. These effects are included through the use of a positive definite lower bound on their contribution to an energy principle.
