Abstract

The National Fire Agency in Korea has implemented various stress management programs for firefighters. However, few studies have focused on the actual effectiveness of these programs. This study thus aimed to explore problems in the psychological counseling system for firefighters, focusing on the case of Jeju Island, and to prepare an efficient operation plan for the system. Survey results indicate that counselors’ lack of understanding of firefighting results in low satisfaction with counseling services, and that firefighters with short service periods require counselors who understand the firefighting profession more than other groups do. In order to overcome these limitations, it is proposed that a counselor’s education program be introduced and that retired firefighters be hired for the psychological counseling program.
