Abstract

Introduction: Health is complete state of physical, mental, social and spiritual wellbeing and not merely the absence of diseases and infirmity. Mental health is state of balance between the individual and the surrounding world, a state of harmony between one self and others, a co existence between the realities of self and that of other people and the environment. Methodology: The Research design and approach is Non experimental, descriptive research study design with exploratory survey approach used for the study. The study was conducted in Private hospitals located in selected district, private hospitals for the mental disorders The population was all the Schizophrenic patients those who underwent Electro somatic Therapy in Selected district, private hospitals The sample for present study was post ECT patients who were in Private hospital during period of data collection. The sample size was 50 patients who were underwent ECT during period of data collection. The Non probability, purposive sampling technique was used for selecting samples which meets the purpose of the study perform physical examination and mental status of examination on post ECT patients and recorded the observation on Performa’s. Result: The mental health status of posts Electro somatic Therapy patients The overall mental health status score was (18.7±2.5) which is 62.5% of the maximum score. It shows that post ECT patients had mild cognitive impairment. Physical health status of post Electro somatic Therapy patients The overall physical health status score was (39.26±0.23) which is 58.59%, shows that post ECT patients had moderate physical impairment on physical health status. The majority of post ECT patients (82%) of them had change in tongue color, nausea and headache and (78%) had earache and (76%) had anxiety, palpitation and backache and (74%) had tachycardia, neck pain , confusion and (70%) had dry mouth. Comparison of mental health status post ECT patients had mild cognitive impairment irrespective of their demographic variables. Comparison of physical health status post ECT patients had moderate physical impairment irrespective of their demographic variables. The significant association was found between number of ECT and the physical health status and significant association was found between education and the mental health status. Conclusion: The major conclusion drawn from study is that the post ECT patients are vulnerable to develop variety of physical health problems and cognitive impairment because of the impact of ECT. Thus, it should emphasized having awareness sessions with the patients and their care takers regarding ECT, post ECT health problems, which helps to improve the awareness, coping and care for post ECT patients. The finding helps the nursing profession to have more emphasis on assessment phase of nursing process.
