Abstract

In the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake, many buildings were collapsed or overturned, and a number of outer concrete walls were broken by the hydro dynamic pressure due to Tsunamis. Out-of-plane strength of wall are usually not concerned in the seismic design and a few static loadings tests verify the actual nonlinear out-of-plane response of concrete walls. In a past study, an out-of-plane strength of outer concrete walls damaged by 2011 Tohoku Tsunami was evaluated based on the plastic hinge mechanism. In this study, the strength evaluation method is verified by the hydro static loading test on the concrete walls, and the out-of-plane strength are compared by the test between the bare concrete walls and walls reinforced with the polyester fiber sheets.
