Abstract

The purpose of the present study is to investigate the violence experiences of domestic violence offender and provide a practice program to prevent domestic violence. Data were collected through in-depth interview with eight participants who were the domestic violence offenders who received an order to attend a lecture and underwent the lecture program. The content analysis was conducted with the collected data through the procedures and methods suggested by Yin(2003). The analytical results were presented in a total of five dimensions : personal dimension, family dimension, marital dimension, social dimension, and violence recognition dimension. In the personal dimension, the participants had difficulties in controlling anger and impulse, displayed a great deal of depression, and showed a drinking problem. In the family dimension and the marital dimension, the violence that the participants had experienced in their original families in their early stage of life was passed down to the new family formed by marriage, and the marital conflict in their marriage life served as an important factor to trigger violence. In the social dimension and the violence recognition dimension, the participants had morbid fear of social labeling, strong stereotype with regard to conventional gender role, strong antipathy to the lecture program that they were ordered to attend, and strong denial and self-justification of violence. This article suggests practice and policy-based methods of intervention to reduce the incidence of domestic violence on the basis of the analyzed results.
