Abstract

With the recent development of greening technology that allows construction in a limited space, this study aims to understand traits of different construction methods of vertical gardens and to examine healing and rest effects of different types of vertical gardens in order to provide basic data for further spreading and promotion of vertical gardens. A survey was conducted to figure out traits of 3 different construction methods and the result showed that the Felt type construction method supports various designs and good quality of naturality. The pocket exchange type of construction method allows easy maintenance and the unit type support various designs, but the quality of naturality is not high and maintenance is also difficult. Therefore, a conclusion was made that distinctive traits of different type vertical gardens create visual differences. Also the study evaluated the physiological and psychological stress relief effect of vertical garden by measuring heart rate and sAmy level. The heart rate was observed which dramatically decreased in all experiments leading a conclusion that simply resting can stabilize hear rates. sAmy level, was also observed to be lower after experiencing vertical gardens regardless of construction methods. Thus, it was found that experiencing vertical gardens causes human body to be controlled more by the parasympathetic nervous and less by the sympathetic nervous system and quantitative data were collected to prove the psychological stress relief effect of the vertical gardens. Also, it was found that physiological and psychological stress relief effect of vertical gardens differed by construction methods and in degrees.
