Abstract

A theoretical method which is applied to examine the shell effects is presented, namely, by calculating the particle number fluctuation in the framework of the relativistic mean-field model with the BCS pairing. We find that the size of the particle number fluctuation is related to the nuclear shell structure. Based on this method, the disappearance of conventional magic numbers and the presence of new magic numbers near drip-line region are studied.
