Abstract

The Vickers hardness on (110) plane of mercurous chloride has been measured. Mercurous chloride crystals have been fabricated in the form of prisms and the refractive indices of ordinary and extraordinary rays were calculated over a wavelength range of 430 to 720 nm. The optical transmittance of 3.3 mm thick polished mercurous chloride samples was recorded using UV-visible and IR spectrophotometers. The absorption bands in the far IR region were explained in comparison with the literature.
