Abstract

The study aims to investigate the Cham stilt housing architectural characteristics designed to adapt to floods in An Giang province-Mekong Delta-Vietnam. To achieve the objective, the following approaches are implemented as follow: Firstly, the geographical location and the climate condition of An Giang province strongly suffered by the annual flood is briefly described. Secondly, the characteristics of the Cham ethnic group, including economy, culture, religion, and daily living, are outlined. Thirdly, a survey is conducted on Cham stilt housing in An Giang to examine their architectural characteristics. These houses, which were constructed over 10 years, are all exemplars of this type. The collected Cham stilt housing shows flood resistance, characteristic has been applied to the modern housing design in An Giang. Lastly, the analysis of architectural characteristics using planning scheme, architectural form, facade, and materials is employed to determine how Cham housing adapt to flood seasons. The result shows that the Cham stilt housing is creatively adapted to the local natural environment, especially flood. Through this study, the characteristics of Cham stilt housing were derived. The finding would provide lessons on architectural solutions for flood-adaptation housing design in Mekong Delta-Vietnam under the climate change and sea-level rise.
