Abstract

ABSTRACTThis study conducted a detailed analysis of the English translations of public signs in Chinese destinations. The definition of public tourism signs was discussed, and four kinds of these signs were classified based on functional characteristics. Taking Xiamen Kulangsu and Mount Wuyi of Fujian Province as case study objects, this paper analysed the English translation errors of public signs in Chinese destinations and suggested improved English versions of these public signs. The causes of English translation errors on public tourism signs were explored. Accordingly, suggestions were given to three groups (translators, sign-makers, managers and administrators) to solve the errors in English translation and to improve the translation quality of public signs in Chinese destinations.
