Abstract

Marine problems have the characteristics of the fuzzy boundary, dynamics, and a full three dimensions. It is not completely suitable for the land based geographic information systems (GIS) to apply fully in the marine environment. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the functional demands of two and three dimensional Marine GIS (MGIS) under various marine applications, and to point out the crux in MGIS when coping with marine problems. This article investigated the current applications of MGIS by reviewing the related references, and discussed the features of marine data. The published three dimensional GIS (3D GIS) data models were also summarized. The three dimensional distribution of the aquatic temperature around coastal water of southern Taiwan was demonstrated by using Intergraph MGE Voxel Analyst (MGVA) software to understand better about the necessary utilization of the 3D MGIS.
