Abstract

Background : Sufferers in disaster areas are crucially in need of residential stability. However, they are confronted by poor surroundings despite the urgent situation created by the colossal disaster. In the early stages a nearby makeshift accommodation might be temporarily available, but stable shelter will be necessary most of all for prompt recovery. In this respect, this study proposes to secure effective baseline data in the cases of planning improved temporary residences, especially by using container construction. Methods : The study proceeds to explore the basic characteristics of the temporary residence and container construction with a critical review of precedent studies and to schematize the analytic frameworks by the synthesis of derived characteristics. Furthermore, it aims to draw results from the analysis and estimation of related domestic and foreign cases regarding container construction as a temporary residence. Result : The study shows that the properties of container construction planning is directly opposed to those of general temporary residences, and that the importance of adequate arrangements considering all the sociocultural traits at the disaster area should be increased. In addition, the efficiency of container construction adaptable for urgent residential conditions can be highly expected compared to the other temporary residences. In conclusion, the planning qualities of container construction should be closely related to those of temporary residences in terms of environment, technology and culture. In particular, the container certified by ISO can function positively as a permanent residential form. Conclusion : The study aims to build the base data for the usability of container construction as an effective temporary residence. Additionally, the study pointed out several problems in that the container is initially not suitable for practical use due to vulnerable interior residential plans even though it fulfills the primary purpose of a residence. Therefore, the overriding issue is to prepare interior planning and design models based on adequate technologies for the promotion of container construction as one of the most effective temporary residences. Expectedly, a follow-up study related to the ISO certified container should be continuously implemented.
