Abstract

Background at present, the research on accessible facilities design of urban public space in our country mainly focuses on urban overall construction level. While based on the present situation of the typical urban public space accessible facilities, the corresponding solving strategies from the design point of view has rarely been studied. Herein, the fifth avenue historical and cultural district in Tianjin (abbreviated as the fifth avenue) is chosen to be the research object, and the corresponding design strategies are obtained through field investigation of the main existing problems in the accessible facilities. Methods It tries to analyze the design strategies of accessible facilities design in terms of systemic, human-oriented and cultural aspects etc. based on Tianjin the fifth avenue historical and cultural district. Results By closely according to the existing problems in accessible facilities of the fifth avenue in Tianjin, this study concludes three strategies including systemic, human-oriented and cultural aspects for accessible design. The proposed strategies will be conducive to solve the problems encountered in the urban accessible design, update the design concept of the accessible facilities, and contribute to establish a perfect, systematic, standardized and artistic-rich accessible city. Conclusions To create a barrier free environment must be based on the systematical urban accessible facilities design, incorporating the design of accessible facilities into the urban planning management system, and in accordance with the overall style of the city or region, which plays an important role to create barrier free urban environment.
