Abstract
“Sustainability” is a buzzword. Sustainable world, Sustainable development, Environment Sustainability, Socio-political Sustainability, Economic Sustainability are the various catch phrases, that are inherently interlinked to each other and are at the core of discussion for almost all individuals and organisations, ranging from International bodies like United Nations, World Bank, UNICEF etc. to every economic nation, every individual country is talking about sustainability. So what exactly is this “sustainability” that everybody’s talking about? Isn’t it consuming at a pace which is in conformity to its natural replenishment, or to say while you eat remember not to engulf what belongs to your children. Sustainability is the intent to provide the best outcomes for the human and natural environments both now and into the indefinite future. Sustainability relates to the continuity of economic, social, institutional and environmental aspects of human society, as well as the non-human environment. Here it is appropriate to quote the popular definition of Sustainable development as given by the Brundtland Report (of the United Nations, WECD, 1987) which defines it as a “development that meets the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of the future generation to meet their own needs”. Today is the age of Globalization, where the east is no longer limited within its boundaries rather it is looking towards west and vice-versa. Efforts are made to intermingle both the worlds for a better and sustainable world. In this backdrop the present paper seeks to discuss in detail in line with recent and earlier literature on the subject of Sustainability and Sustainable development, its evolution and growth, and how the developed countries of the west and the developing economies of the east will together realize the vision of a Sustainable world. Keywords: sustainability, sustainable development, sustainable world, dimensions to sustainability.
