Abstract
Stably operating limits of spiral grooved journal bearing for cylindrical and conical half-frequency whirl modes are investigated in this paper with a special attention paid to the cavitation occurrence. Half-frequency whirl in conical mode is observed experimentally with finding that the amplitude of vibration is considerably large. A parameter expressing the reduction of damping effect due to cavitation occurrence is introduced to agree with experimental and theoretical results and the stability limits based on that supposition in cylindrical half-frequency whirl mode are discussed.
