A Study on “Social Madness” and “Radical Innocence” in Edward Bond’s Lear

Abstract

본 논문은 에드워드 본드의 1971년 초연 작품『리어』를 통해 관객들의 인식변화와 새로운 현실 창조를 항상 주장해왔던 본드가 어떻게 자신의 ‘사회적 광기’ 개념과 ‘극단적 무지의 자아’ 개념을 적용하고 있는지를 분석한다. 본드는 셰익스피어의 『리어』가 기존의 분석대로는 더 이상 현대에 ‘의미’를 부여해 줄 수 없다고 판단하고 자신만의 새로운 ‘리어’를 창조한다. 자신이 과거의 ‘신화’에 사로 잡혀 ‘사회적 광기’에 휩싸인 존재임을 인식하지 못하던 리어는 두 딸들, 보디스와 폰타넬의 반란을 겪으면서 자신의 내면 깊은 곳에 존재해왔던 ‘극단적 무지의 자아’와 조우하게 된다. 억압받는 존재를 대변하는 ‘코델리아’의 혁명마저 리어가 계승한 신화의 눈멀음에서 벗어나지 못한 채 자신의 신화를 그대로 계승하는 암울한 현실은 그로 하여금 처절하지만 강렬한 ‘영웅적 액션’에 돌입하도록 만든다. 사회가 주입한 문화의 형태로 계승된 거짓된 ‘신화’에서 벗어나 부패한 극단적 무지의 자아, 즉 ‘사회적 자아’를 인식하고 초기 상태의 순수했던 ‘극단적 무지의 자아’를 회복한 리어는 자신으로부터 시작된 불행의 고리를 끊고 자신의 ‘책임’을 다하기 위해 끝까지 투쟁한다. 본드의 『리어』의 특징은 리어가 자신의 ‘사회적 광기’를 깨닫고 ‘극단적 무지의 자아’를 찾아가는 전체의 과정을 관객들의 ‘부패한 극단적 무지의 자아’를 깨우는 일에 집중시킨다는 점이다. 본 논문은 본드가 작품 초기 단계부터 일관되게 주장해 온 드라마투르기적 개념들이 보다 발전된 형태로 제시되기 시작한 1990년대 중반 이후의 이론에 맞춰 『리어』를 분석한다.Edward Bond has been consistently insisting his dramaturgic theory to fulfill “Rational Theatre.” Lear (1971) could be the first play to construct his concept of “Social Madness” and “Radical Innocence” that have been developed more explicitly and thoroughly in later theoretical writings. He wanted to create dramatic structures appropriate to the modern audience’s needs and unveil the myth they were trapped in by making them look through their inner self and realize they are the bearers of radical innocence. In order to do that, it is necessary to recognize the corrupted radical innocence saturated with and conditioned by authority’s meanings and ideology through ‘the shock of recognition’ because we are all in a state of social madness and trapped in the madman’s distorted fantasies. Lear is the very representation of social madness and the result of every cultural illusion and myth. Based on Bond’s well-calculated dramaturgic approaches and theatrical metaphors, Lear plays a role of restoring the ‘sanity’ of the audience in order to get them out of their own mythical world.
