Abstract

Site index is a common method used to evaluate the site quality. Site index can be defined as the average height of dominant and co-dominant trees in a baseline age at a particular location. Site index is species specific, which means different tree species own different site index even in the same location. In this paper, we evaluate the site quality of larix gmelini in Anshan city of China by the site index. Firstly we built the tree height growth model and then we determined the baseline age and the site index notch. With the site index table we developed, we can calculated the rank of site quality of each plots. Result showed the larix gmelini site qualities vary. The percentage of each site level (excellent, good, medium, poor) is 20.16%, 26.36%, 31.01%, 22.48%. Our results and conclusion can be a useful scientific basis for forest management.
