Abstract

The study aims to explore the potential effects of self-directed intensive listening practice via recordings of VOA based on the theory of learning strategy on the listening proficiency among English major undergraduates at Chinese universities. The participants include undergraduates in English major in four grades from three universities in Beijing. Two sets of TEM-4 tests and one set of questionnaires are used to collect the data of different phases in the study. Results show that college students' listening proficiency improves tremendously after they apply the method of intensive listening in their self-directed time, which inspires professors to include the method in college English courses as well so as to assist students with the enhancement of listening skills.
