Abstract

Button cutters are used in the raise boring machines reamerhead for rock excavation. Full-scale linear cutting tests as the most reliable and accurate method are widely used to predict performance and design cutterhead of mechanical miners such as tunnel boring machines and raise boring machines. In this study, full-scale linear cutting tests are performed on three block samples obtained from the Balya lead-zinc underground mine in Turkey, with a 305 mm in diameter button cutter having an insert tip width of 11 mm. These tests are performed in double spiral (scroll) cutting pattern with line spacing of 25 mm and varying depths of cut per revolution. The average and maximum normal and rolling forces and specific energy are measured in each cut. The study indicates that the optimum ratios of line spacing to the depth of cut per revolution are obtained as 3.1 for skarn sample, and 2.1 for both limestone-1 and limestone-2 samples.
