Abstract

In this paper, the optimum design of a cargo ship for carrying steel materials is considered. For cargo operation under any weather condition, it is designed to have a roof and a large cargo opening on side hull. However, there is some difficulty in structural design due to this large opening and some modification is required. It is desired to use a zoomed model for stress analysis via FEM because of its computational time, especially for optimization process in which many structural analyses are required. Hence, sensitivity analysis is utilized here to evaluate boundary displacement for the zoomed FEM model resulting in effective structural analysis in this optimization problem. Design variables not only in the zoomed region but also in any region can be handled with this method.
