Abstract

AbstractEarth dams are the artificial embankments and are built to store water for various agricultural, industrial, and drinking purposes. One of the destructive factors that cause failure in the body of earth dams is the vibration caused by the earthquake in surrounding area of the dam site. Accurate assessment of the stability of earth dams and embankments during earthquakes has become a critical aspect for the safe and cost effective design of many projects. The behavior of earth dams has several complexities against dynamic forces and its assessment requires detailed and scientific analysis. Soil softening leading to liquefaction failure is an important factor to be addressed in design of an earth dam, built in a zone of considerable seismic activity. In the present study, liquefaction susceptibility of different sections of dam like filters, drains, and dam foundation is assessed numerically. Analytical procedure is further incorporated as per Indian Standards for validation and verification on results obtained by numerical analysis. Further, factor of safety against liquefaction failure is found, and suitable mitigation techniques are discussed briefly.KeywordsLiquefaction assessmentCyclic stress ratioCyclic resistance ratioCorrection factorsMitigation methods
