Abstract

In this paper, the university-industry research collaborations under the Japanese innovation system are discussed from the viewpoint of external funding and on the basis of public and detailed data. First, the trends in joint research, contract research, and research through donations are clarified by time series. The contract content including the ownership of the intellectual property in joint research is clearly defined. Therefore, joint research is essential for university-industry collaborations. The characteristics of companies and researchers that engage in joint research projects are analyzed based on detailed data from Niigata University. The results reveal that the joint research projects are properly characterized by scale, location, and industry sector.
