Abstract

In recent years, context-aware services (CAS) becomes very popular. The purpose of CAS is to adjust and execute services based on user situation. Many researchers use ontology as a control core of the CAS system. Ontology is a method to represent relationship between different information, and user can obtain explicit or implicit information using ontology. A CAS system typically consists of an ontology model set, a rule set, and a reasoning engine. A user should define the ontology models and the rules for his/her own problem, and the reasoning engine can generate proper services based on the situation. In the process of obtaining the ontology models and the rules, different users usually have different strategies, and this often results in different CAS systems. To guarantee the efficiency of the system, we propose a method for rule-based ontology modeling in this paper. Using the proposed method, different users can generate compact ontology models efficiently. To demonstrate the process of designing a CAS system, we provide a case study using a virtual smart room.
