Abstract

In this study, fatigue tests were conducted on aluminum alloy 7075-T6 to study fatigue crack growth and crack closure behavior of the material. The experiments included the determination of the crack-opening levels K op as a function of ΔK, the rate of fatigue crack growth da/dN as a function of ΔK eff , where ΔK eff (= K max -K op ) is the effective stress intensity factor range. In addition, a change in the value of Kop due to the specimen-surface removal and a crack front shape were also investigated. It was concluded that the aluminum alloy 7075-T6 exhibits plasticity-induced fatigue crack closure. The crack growth rates and crack opening behavior were in good agreement with similar results in the literature.
