Abstract
LAM (Laser-assisted machining) was proposed to increase machinability by using laser preheating. Before machining, the workpiece is preheated by laser to decrease strength of material. In this reason, cutting force and tool wear is decreased when machining by LAM. The purpose of this study is to propose a constitutive equation for LAM. The constitutive equation is a relation between physical quantities such as shear stress and strain. These quantities can be predicted by using the constitutive equation in any conditions. Before conducting experiment, FEA (Finite element analysis) is carried out to obtain the laser power to sustain a certain preheating temperature. The experiments are conducted by varying the laser power, feed rate and spindle speed. And a constitutive equation for LAM is proposed using Merchant’s cutting theory and cutting force measured by a dynamometer in the experiments.
