Abstract
The present study focuses on the development of fish scale extracted Collagen/PVA (FCO-PVA) & commercial Chitosan/PVA (CH-PVA) nanofibrous matrix by electrospinning method for wound dressing application and aims to compare the properties of FCO-PVA verses CH-PVA. First, FCO was prepared from tilapia fish scales and characterized using UV–Visible spectrophotometer. Further, individual stock solutions of 2 wt% FCO in acetic acid, 2 wt% of CH in acetic acid and 10 wt% of PVA in D.W. were prepared. Later, three blended solutions of FCO-PVA & CH-PVA were prepared in the ratio 9:1, 8:2, & 7:3 respectively and electrospun to obtain nanofibrous wound dressing. FTIR was used to analyse the interactions between the functional groups of FCO. The developed nanofibrous matrix was subjected to SEM, mechanical testing, moisture vapour transmission rate (MVTR) and antibacterial test. Both FCO-PVA & CH-PVA scaffolds unveiled good antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. The prepared wound dressing showed a maximum tensile strength of 12 MPa which lies in the range of ideal mechanical strength. MVTR result of FCO-PVA showed that the nanofibrous matrix will provide a suitable environment to the wound bed. These results suggest that the prepared nanofibrous wound dressing could serve as a capable wound dressing material.
