Abstract

The brittle fracture initiation in welded joint of 80 kg/mm2 class high tensile steel has been studied using wide plate specimens each of which had a surface notch along the weld fusion line and weld angular distortion.Effects of the size of surface notch, the amount of weld angular distortion and weld residual stress on the brittle fracture initiation characteristics of the weld fusion line of the steel were clarified. It was found that the fracture stress data were easily explained by a newly-developed KIC equation by which it was possible to express quantitatively the effects of surface notch size and amount of angular distortion.Furthermore it was noted that the brittle fracture initiation characteristics of the welded joint with notch and angular distortion might be inferred from several experiments.
