Abstract

This study attempted to investigate hair and scalp care attitudes through self-diagnosis. The following research problems were examined to suggest a direction for hair and scalp care and for use as basic data for home care suggestions. First, the demographic characteristics of subjects were analyzed. Second, hair and scalp care self-diagnosis was examined. Third, demographic characteristics by hair and scalp care self-diagnosis were investigated. Fourth, differences in care attitude by self-diagnosis were examined. For empirical analysis on the purpose of the study, women living in Seoul were examined from November 1 to 20, 2016. The results found the following: First, hair and scalp care attitudes are comprised of four elements: interpersonal relationships, psychological stability, conspicuous consumption and hygienic management. Second, according to hair and scalp care self-diagnosis, ‘good scalp condition’ was higher than ‘poor scalp condition.’ Third, in terms of hair and scalp care attitudes by age, high scores were found in 20s, 30s and 50s and older in interpersonal relationships. From a hygienic management standpoint, a significant difference was found in those in their 20s and 50s and older. In terms of marital status, ‘married’ revealed outstanding results from the perspective of interpersonal relationships. In terms of occupation, a significant difference was observed in hygienic management. For home care through self-diagnosis, it is necessary to use hair products or to color hair or perm properly. To have a better look, in addition, it is necessary to use related products such as hair treatment packs. Since these products include chemicals, however, they could cause some harm to the scalp. Therefore, it is necessary not to use these products too much and to keep the scalp clean and healthy through their proper use and through scalp massage.
