Abstract

AbstractWe studied antenna gain degradation of phased array antennas due to phase quantization by digital phase shifters, where the amplitude weighting for element excitation and the losses in the phase shifters were taken into account. By adding a phase offset to the ideal analog phase shifts before they are quantized, the degradation can be varied as a result of the change in the phase errors due to quantization. It was shown that the amplitude weighting and losses greatly affected the peak‐to‐peak variation of the degradation and they must be taken into account to obtain the optimum phase offset that gives the least degradation in actual phased array antennas using digital phase shifters. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
