A Study on Akutagawa-Ryunosuke’s “hyottoko”

Abstract

「횻토코」의 주인공 헤이키치는 시타마치 조닌 사회의 도덕을 따라 의무를 다하며 선량한 생활인으로 산다. 그러나 이러한 그의 모습은 타인의 평가를 의식한 위선적인 가면이다. 그의 본연적 욕구는 온갖 세속적 도덕이나 의무, 이해타산에서 벗어나 오직 자신의 내적 욕구에 따라 바보춤을 추는‘신성한 바보’횻토코가 되는 것이다. 하지만 그는 이 같은 자기 본연의 욕구를 무의식 속에 억압한다. 그러면서 그는 무의식중에 술에 취해 바보춤을 추고 또 개인의 본연적 욕구를 따르는 삶에 대한 꿈을 충동적인 거짓말로 이야기하는 형태로 자신의 본연의 욕구를 표출하며 자유와 행복을 누린다. 결국 헤이키치는 꽃놀이축제날 술에 취해 횻토코 가면을 쓰고 횻토코가 되어 춤을 추다가 뇌일혈로 죽는데, 헤이키치는 그렇듯 ‘신성한 바보’로서 행복한 상태로 죽어갈 때, 자신의 무의식을 의식화할 수 있게 되고 비로소 자신의 진정한 자아는 ‘신성한 바보’ 횻토코였음을 인식한다. 아쿠타가와는 타인을 의식한 가면을 쓰고 산 헤이키치의 삶에서, 본연적 욕구를 따른 삶의 행복을 이야기한 그의 거짓말만이 타인에게 전해진 유일한 그의 진실 이며, 때문에 오래 기억되고 전해질 가치를 갖는다고 말한다. 또‘신성한 바보’헤 이키치가 일본의 미적 전통으로 이어져 내려온‘무용함의 신성한 미’의 계승자였음을 증명함으로써 그것이야말로 헤이키치 본연의 존재가치임을 이야기한다. 이렇게 아쿠타가와는「횻토코」에서 개인의 본연적 욕구, 즉 개인의 자아를 순수하여 아름답고 강인한 본연적 욕구로 묘사하며 그 실현을 생의 가장 참된 가치로서 제시하고 있다.Heikici, the main character of this work, lives as a good person according to the morality of the society of Shitamachi Chonin. Meanwhile, Heikichi died of cerebral hemorrhage while dancing in a Hyottoko mask under the influence of alcohol on the flower festival day. At this time, Heikici, as a ‘holy fool’, could be conscious of his unconsciousness. And then finally, he recognizes his true self is the ‘holy fool’ Hyottoko. So Akutagawa presents the realization of one’s natural desires as the most true value of life, describing the individual’s natural desires as the pure, beautiful, strong inner desires in ‘Hyottoko’.
