Abstract

In this article, we propose a method of partial decoding of image blocks by using the Golomb–Rice code (a type of variable-length codes) with some modifications introduced in its method of construction. The proposed method consists in constructing the code so that the decoding is possible anywhere in a bit pattern comprising a specific codeword, with this codeword being used for the detection of the starting point of the block. Since by matching this pattern it is possible to detect the starting point of the specified image block, it is also possible to decode only the data of the necessary block without successive decoding of the code string of the encoded system. The simulation using image signals segmented into blocks and converted into a prediction error system demonstrated that the proposed encoding method is almost as effective as the Golomb–Rice code with respect to the partial decoding. © 2000 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 3, 84(3): 72–80, 2001
