Abstract

The influences of binder characteristics and binder-fiber adhesion on the tensile properties of xanthate-binder cotton- base parallel-laid nonwoven fabrics have been studied. The breaking-stress value reaches a maximum at a binder content of about 23% and beyond that it drops. The values of stress and initial moduli in long and cross directions for all binder contents is in the proportion of 2:1 approximately. Effects of process variables, such as press-weight ratio, aging time, ripening time, have been studied. The aging time markedly influences the tensile properties, but neither of the other two variables has any effect. The wet versus 65% RH tenacity of the fabric is fairly close to that of viscose rayon. Applica tion of wetting agent to fiber-webs yields lower breaking stress and initial modulus values.
