Abstract

The gamma-ray spectrum after thermal neutron capture has been studied using a Ge(Li) pair spectrometer. Out of 140 transitions observed above 1.95 MeV, 3 have been tentatively assigned to 38Cl and the rest to 36Cl. An improved decay scheme is proposed for 36Cl which involves 43 levels. The Q value for the 35Cl(n,γ)36Cl reaction is estimated to be 8579.1 ± 0.5 keV and the multiplicity of the reaction found to be 2.5. A tentative estimate of the Q value for the 37Cl(n,γ)38Cl reaction yielded a result of 6107.4 ± 0.8 keV. The mean reduced widths for primary dipole transitions have been calculated and compared with theoretical estimates.
