Abstract

Abstract The experiment described examined the Invariance Hypothesis (IH) in the form Perceived Size, S'/ Perceived Distance D' = k Actual Size S/ Actual Distance D where the spatial extent scaling constant (k) was eliminated from the final test equation by the subjects making three judgements: a match of the size variable to the size of the standard object; a match of the distance of the distance variable to that of the standard object; and a match of the size of the size variable to the size of the distance variable as set in the second match. A new design of the size variable in terms of its frontal aspect ratio (AR) provided support for the importance of aspect ratio for the accuracy of size estimation judgements.
