Abstract

INTRODUCTIONJENSEN et al. (1958) were the first to show that egg weight and egg production in hens could be improved by the addition of corn oil to both practical and semi-purified diets. Further investigations (Shutze and Jensen, 1963; Menge et al., 1965a) have suggested that linoleic acid, the major fatty acid present in corn oil, is essential for maximum egg production, egg weight, fertility and hatchability in the laying hen. However, recent studies by Menge et al. (1965b) have indicated that menhaden oil has an effect on egg production, egg weight and hatchability which cannot be accounted for by the amount of linoleic acid provided by menhaden oil. Harms and Waldroup (1963) have concluded that the response to dietary corn oil supplementation is due more to energy concentration than to essential fatty acid deficiency. Blamberg et al. (1964) have also concluded that metabolizable energy has a greater effect on .
