Abstract

1. A study of the IR absorption spectra for benzonitrile, pyridine, and CCl4 adsorbed on various amorphous and zeolite-containing industrial catalysts has shown that these catalyst contains three types of hydroxyl groups which differ in proton-donor activity, and three types of acceptor centers which differ in strength. 2. The change in the intensity of the 2250 cm−1 band in the IR spectrum of adsorbed benzonitrile is the result of base interaction with medium strength acceptor centers; the fact that this change can be successfully correlated with the initial activity of the various industrial catalysts suggests a certain catalytic similarity here.
