Abstract

The OC curve of the RS CVn-type binary system, AR Lac, has been analyzed using the method of Kalimeris et al. It is shown that the orbital period of the system is modulated with a long period of 47 years and an amplitude of 1.56×10 −5 d, while undergoing a constant decrease. Possible physical mechanisms for the variations are investigated. The observed variations may be caused by a combination of a magnetic activity cycle in the secondary component and an orbital angular momentum loss due to magnetic braking.
