Abstract
An investigation was made to determine whether the potential fertilizing ability of a semen sample could be predicted from data on the respiratory metabolism of the semen and washed sperm in the absence as well as presence of added glycolysable substrate. With 53 samples of semen collected from eight bulls a total of 702 inseminations was made. Correlations were determined between percentage fertility and each of the following metabolic characters: ZO2 (1st hr.), average ZO2 (1st and 2nd hr.), ZO2 (1st hr.)/ZO2 (2nd hr.), and average ZO2/percent motility. No significant correlation was found with any of the above characters with the exception of average ZO2/percent motility which showed a negative correlation between bulls (P = 0.05).
