Abstract

Viral proteins from barley stripe mosaic virus or tobacco mosaic virus interfere with the infection of C. amaranticolor by homologous virus when added prior to or simultaneously with the virus. Proteins from foreign viruses do not inhibit virus infectivity. Inhibition depends on the ratio of protein to virus in the inoculation mixture. Barley stripe mosaic virus protein and tobacco mosaic virus protein polymerized into rodlike aggregates can also interfere with infection by homologous virus. Potato virus X protein does not interfere with infection by its homologous virus. Interference did not occur between free viral RNA and homologous viral protein.
