Abstract

In connection with attempts to grow large single crystals of UO 2, electrolyses of UO 2Cl 2 under various conditions have been carried out and it has been found that the products at the electrodes do not correspond to the deposition of UO 2 ++ and Cl − ions only. Several reactions are obviously occurring simultaneously and experiments have been performed to isolate and determine these various reactions. From the results of these experiments a reaction mechanism is formulated to explain the observations, and suggestions are made for future attempts to grow single crystals.
