Abstract

The effects of specimen width W, ratio ( a jW ) , slow stable crack growth ( Δa) and toughness value on the interrelation of crack opening displacement and the J-integral were experimentally investigated. A series of tests were performed on a structural steel where the specimen size and the crack depth/specimen width ratio ( a W ) were varied. Results show that the specimen width W does not appear to significantly affect the m value; a lower a W ratio yields a higher m, and m icreases with increasing toughness value; however, m does not show any clear tendency of dependency with the slow stable crack growth Δa.
