Abstract

The spin‐lattice relaxation rates of the phosphorous nucelei in ATP have been measured as a function of temperature in the presence of manganese perchlorate using pulsed nuclear magnetic resonance methods. Detailed interpretation of the results in terms of the dipolar interaction between the electron and nuclear spins leads to the conclusion that the α‐phosphorous atom is more distant from the manganese ion than the β‐ or γ‐phosphorous atoms, which are equidistant from the metal ion within experimental error. The rate constant for the manganese ion dissociating from the complex is found to be 150 ms−1 at 25°C.
