Abstract

The commonly accepted gain-bandwidth model for the operational amplifier can be inadequate when characterizing the performance of active filters. An example is presented in which the output resistance of the operational amplifier (op-amp) is a dominant degeneracy and a simulation approach is discussed which enables a comprehensive model of the op-amp to be investigated and permits a thorough comparison between alternative configurations. This technique avoids the approximations inherent in model simplification, dominant pole assessment, and other analytic approaches.
