Abstract

The impedance spectra from studying a wide range of potassium concentrations (10 −1–10 −6 M) in aqueous solutions in contact with valinomycin containing plasticised polymer membranes are reported. For membranes where the K + valinomycin ratio in the membrane is 10:1 (typical of the ratio found in actual sensors) the interfacial impedance (a Warburg impedance) can be detected only as concentrations of K + in the solution fall below 2 × 10 −6 M. A related system involving the transfer of tetraphenylarsonium ions which shows similar behaviour is also reported. The presence of albumin in the aqueous phase does not change the behaviour of the K + exchanging membranes. However when ionic surfactants are added to the aqueous phase they are transferred into the membrane phase.
